Affogato

The Holidays are certainly going to look a little different this year! What is normally a large gathering filled with food is going to be MUCH smaller. And so is the menu. But that doesn’t mean it has to be any less delicious!

Affogato is a simple, Italian dessert that is perfect for a small group! It’s an easy thing to customize to anyone’s taste because it has a TON of variety! But I’m sharing the original affogato recipe with you today, along with how to use a traditional Italian moka pot, in case you’ve never seen one before!

Affogato means “drowned” in Italian, so we are “drowning’ our gelato with espresso! As always, when anything has just a few ingredients I HIGHLY recommend getting very high quality ingredients. Starting with you coffee! Check out my friends over at the Coffee In Italia site for a great selection of Italian coffees and espressos, along with moka pots and espresso sets! You’ll also want to spring for a really good ice cream or gelato. Thankfully I’m close by to a few amazing gelaterias that have imported the churning machines from Italy and use classic recipes with great ingredients. BUT a good all-natural ice cream or gelato from the store will work here as well.

In terms of flavor - you can’t go wrong with a classic vanilla, which is what I’m using in the video below. But here is where affogato has a lot of variety. You can use just about any flavor that works well with coffee. Chocolate, hazelnut, and coffee ice creams are all great ideas! But as always, your food is YOURS! So use whichever flavor you think sounds amazing! Then simply pour a shot of espresso over it and dive into the perfect little indulgence!

Affogato is a great idea for the Holidays this year because it’s all pantry/freezer safe. So you can have everything stocked up without any prep work involved! Got little ones? Just skip the espresso and pour some hot chocolate over their scoop! It’s an easy way to finish up a small holiday meal, without looking or feeling like you did nothing but shop for ingredients! Affogato
Serves 1

1 scoop gelato or ice cream (vanilla, chocolate or flavor of choice)
1 shot of
espresso
optional: chocolate shavings, whipped cream

Spoon gelato into a coffee mug or small dish. Pour espresso over gelato. Top with optional toppings if using and serve immediately.
